The Famous Medieval Town of Lerwick

The word Lerwick is derived from Leirwik and it means bay of clay. It is situated on the east coastal of the Shetland, Scotland. It is the capital of the Shetland. The Lerwick is not densely populated however, the total estimated population is around 7000 to 8000 people. Due to its geography, it is the main port of the Shetland. The majority of the population is related to business like fishing and ferry port business. The offshore oil industry is also served through this port and oil vessels are served there.

The ferries also served as means of transport between Lerwick and Aberdeen and also to related costal areas. There is also another ferry service that routes through a terminal in the center of the town and service to Out Skerries and Bressay. Lerwick is also catered by Tingwall airport which is located at the distance of few miles.

Lerwick is a developed area with reasonable health facilities.

On the South Road, Health center is situated. The Gilbert Bain Hospital provides the health services to the Lerwick people like rest of the Shetland.

Being small town there are some schools but students find it very difficult to study further. The nearest university for the local students is situated in Aberdeen. The means of transport to the university is boat and it normally takes good ten to twelve hours journey to reach the destination. So only solution is to reside there and as a result, expenses are not bearable for all students. Most famous festival of the Shetland is Up Helly-Aa and it is hosted by Lerwick. It is very famous fire work festival.

It has its own independent radio station. The radio channel covers the new and market conditions of the Lerwick. Shetland museum and Clickimin Broch are notable places among others.
